David Marshall and his wife Wendy purchased the Elk Ridge property in 2001.  The original farm and surrounding
land had been owned by Wendy’s ancestors since the early 1800’s.    The Jones family settled in Lost River Township
in 1816 after receiving some of the surrounding property as a land grant for military service in the War of 1812.  Elk
Ridge is part of an authentic family farm that has been handed down in the family for several generations.
The Marshall Family purchased the farm from family members and began making renovations to the Elk Ridge
property in 2001.  They had previously purchased another family plot nearby and started Rusk Elk Ranch where
they raised trophy elk and managed a hunting preserve.  Elk Ridge was originally planned as a private hunting
retreat.  But as the project progressed, the dream of opening a public restaurant with elk as the specialty dish
emerged.  Bucks and Bulls Tavern at Elk Ridge was open for business from 2003 to 2004.    Elk Ridge was
closed for regular dining business in 2004 while Mr. Marshall concentrated on his fiber optics and
telecommunications consulting business.  In 2005 and 2006, several vineyards were planted at Elk Ridge and
some remodeling was completed on the “turn-of-the-century” historic barn to make the floor plan more practical
for the restaurant including plans for a winery to open sometime in the future.
